Why California requires mattress recycling

In California, mattresses must be recycled, not landfilled. Here's how the program works.

What you'll learn

  • California's Bye Bye Mattress law
  • How the mattress recycling program is funded
  • What gets recovered (80% of mattress weight, steel, foam, cotton, fabric)
  • Your options for disposal: curbside, drop-off, or haul-away

Step by step

  1. California mattress recycling is funded through a program run by the Mattress Recycling Council (CRRC).
  2. You have three options: schedule curbside (if your city offers it), drop off at a collection site, or hire a hauler.
  3. Mattresses must be dry and in clear plastic for transport.
  4. Around 80% of the mattress weight, steel springs, foam, cotton, fabric, is recovered for reuse.
