Where to drop off household hazardous waste

Paint, pesticides, batteries, motor oil, and propane tanks. The County takes them free.

What you'll learn

  • Why haulers (including us) legally cannot take hazardous waste
  • The County of San Diego HHW drop-off locations and hours
  • What counts as HHW (paint, oil, batteries, propane, pesticides)
  • How to transport safely, sealed, labeled, upright

Step by step

  1. Check the list: paint, pesticides, motor oil, automotive fluids, batteries, propane tanks, fluorescent tubes, sharps.
  2. Seal each container. Keep original labels when possible.
  3. Transport upright in the trunk, never in the passenger cabin.
  4. Drop off at Miramar, Chula Vista, Escondido, or Ramona HHW facility (appointments often required).
  5. Free for all San Diego County residents, bring proof of address.
Safety note

If a junk pile contains HHW, separate it before the pros arrive. We'll take everything else and tell you exactly which HHW location is closest to you.
